*Credits to the MMORPG.COM Podcast for this information

It all makes sense, yet it's very alarming information!

The Mobile version in Korea alone yields 3X the revenue as the PC version in ALL regions combined. If you thought NA/EU where the main source of revenue, lookout it's all about Mobile.

With the availability of Phones and auto play this seems reasonable. However, mobile games are notorious for Pay2Win and this kind of spending can destroy other markets.

Quite frankly, why should a large studio bother producing console/PC games when Mobile is so much more lucrative? If people really want to have AAA games on the PC the culture and spending habits may need to change.

It's also very bad news on the Pay2Win controversy. This isn't an isolated incident. Overall Mobile games will most likely dominate the Market for many years even decades.

Also....mobile games suck and are hardly games...IMO. Geez being an adult gamer is sad.... do "games" get made anymore or just themed casinos?

Due to the addiction issues China is restricting the amount of games produced per year. They need to be approved by the government now.
As per mobile, it's an accessibility issue. There are more phones in existence than people on the planet. The BDO version of mobile is actually breaking some grounds in things like the character customization. Many other mobile games have very limited options in that department.

People can also do more social activities while allowing their phone to auto play.

Personally, i'd rather play the game on a console/pc and get the full experience, but as a society Mobile will dominate.

Just because your heard someone say that doesn't mean it's true. Not saying it's not true but I find it hard to believe, there is only 51M people in Korea. How much can these people make to outspend the rest of the world on one game. Is Korea's economy that strong now?

We should collect just the sales of Pearl Items for the last on all regions and see what the comes out too, that wouldn't be including all the other purchases made, just pearl items and multiply that times 3. I feel that would be a large sum, just doesn't seem Koreans in general have that much free cash, at least from what I remember when I was there a long ago.

Anyway, I haven't played a single Mobile game I have enjoyed more than 5 minutes, I've always liked BDO so if they could translate that to Mobile I wouldn't mind really. I'm sure it would do extremely well because there really isn't any competition on mobile imo.

That's why I put the source in the original post. Their information has been very reliable and they put in a lot of work to get it right. Everyone will make a few mistakes, but overall they do a great job. A lot of this type of information is public records put out by the companies on earnings reports.

South Korea's culture is heavily into gaming. This data is also consistent with many other examples of even trashy mobile games yielding massive amounts. I wouldn't be surprised to see the NA/EU sales shift to Mobile in the future in the same way.

They generate more revenue than AAA titles in western countries as well, though.

That was pointed out in some of the previous podcasts. It's cringe worthy that some low quality mobile game would generate more than a company with multiple quality products. It skews the Work Hard > Succeed results.

There was no mention of the PC versions not being profitable. The real question is whether Kakao's license will be renewed. As mentioned in another thread the Russian contract was not renewed leaving them in a questionable state. PA may attempt to self publish in more regions.

I don't see the PC version vanishing anytime soon though.

It's because a lot of people in Kr don't have a really functional PC at their home. They have to go to PC cafes etc to play it for a lot of people.

    We already knew that.

For PC version the revenue comes from NA/EU.

I'm not sure exactly when this data was released, but it's not something everyone just "knew". The fact that most pc sales come from NA/EU has been out for a while, but it's not really the point of this.

It also has major ramifications and illustrates you may have even less power. If the majority of sales are through Mobile and players threaten to quit on the PC version, those threats mean far less. It's also something for players to think about. What kind of future do you want?

Some people will have a choice to make. If they are fully aware of the ramifications they will need to make a real decision. To fund mobile or pc/console. Where they spend that money will have a large impact on the direction of the gaming world.

Right now it's on course for full mobile.

    1. It's 2018, and there are far more mobile users than pc users since 2 years or so.
    2. Companies still produce for PC because it's still a market and profit to be made.

"why why why" you really have no clue what's going on in the world, do you?

Pearl Abyss does not appear to have plans to merge the two. However, many years ago a few games included a mobile option to their game. It would be nice to see some that work out the mechanics of this in a way to suite mobile/console/pc.
