What are casual players and what do they want?

I think it's time someone clears this up for both Pearl Abyss and some players here. What is a casual player?

A casual player is someone who doesn't play regularly. It's that simple. They just play when they feel like it and they expect to be entertained. So what is a casual player in BDO?

Casual players won't grind to so-called soft cap unless grinding is what they enjoy about the game. Casual players will want to quest, do the main story, do side quests, pursue life skills, and PvP for fun.

What is realistic gear for most casual players? Something that you can get safely if you grind for it. So this would be DUO weapons and armour and Asula accessories. You can get this safely, but once you try to enhance to TRI, you will constantly degrade your gear and lose your earnings. Like I said, some casuals might enjoy grinding and they don't mind this, but most will. Why? Because of what I said, They want to play for fun.

    Casual players are worthless?

Does this mean casual players are worthless for Pearl Abyss? Far from it. Players in an MMO are content for other players. You wouldn't wanna play a dead game or a game that's just domiated by elitists and impossible to get into. Casual players often work real life jobs, they tend to have money to spend on things they like, more money than no-life kids.

Why are players not sticking around? Is it PA's fault?

So what can you do to retain your casual players? First of all PA is already doing a lot of things right. DUO/Asula gear should be sufficient to participate in node wars and sieges. They are large-scale PvP, you're not going up against veterans 1v1, you are supposed to work together to take down stronger opponents. But it doesn't matter that the system is okay, if every single person you meet in-game or in the forums tells you otherwise.

All I'm hearing is BS like soft cap is TET gear and TRI yellow accessories. You don't stand a chance as a noob. You need 10k hours in this game to stand a chance. Castles are owned by elite guilds, you can't do ****. Guild payouts amount to billions each week, while you can make 10m per hour if you're lucky. You need a worker empire to compete in this game. You need to be on 24/7. You need artisan workers with super high stats. You need hundreds of energy and CP.

This is why new players don't stay. It's not because they can't have fun. It's because of this contitioning and the bad rep of the game.

How to have more players in BDO?

It is all about perception! PA have to start facing the music. They can't change people. They can't change the negativity. But they can defeat it. Either start handing out tons more rewards to new players so that it's easy to enhance to TRI, or make TRI safe-enhanceable (for cheap, not for Cron stones). Hand out cool jewellery. Even hand out free boss gear regularly if you want. The point is if people do not believe that it's possible to enjoy endgame with subpar gear, give them better gear. You're not gonna lose anything by making people look better. You're not gonna lose anything by having more players in your game.

Can't even use casual players as fodder... I have a casual friend who plays the game without spending money and after a year, he's only on Grunil TRI, but like him, many people come here for the PVE. I as well, but the pve in bdo is super boring. I only found Bosses fun, and at some point they become a chore like the rest.
Afk activities tend to tame casual players into less casual players. Different ways to obtain things also attract players, but the endless grind also create an endless gap that new players have to face. Imagine this game in 10 years. Won't the gap to new players be humongous? The very system of this game prevents catch-up mechanics without making things even easier for the veterans.
What I'd do? Make new players and casuals valuable. Increase their worth by capping stats in certain maps/events. (Like gw2, lev 1 can fight lev 80) Places where people can still have fun and achieve things even if they have 100 AP. There are plenty of reasons in the game to seek AP, but there hardly is any lower ground for fun. The fun's at the Soft cap, or so I've heard countless times while playing BDO. But you reach there and get destroyed by renown-empowered folk.

All of these problems have already been fixed.
    • You say you want content for casuals
    • Creative Updates
    • Developers who understand and care
    • Content for the players
    • No Pay2Win
All you have to do it download POE and you can have everything you want. Why are you expecting these results from a company that for 3 years shows no sign of them? PA isn't interested in any of that. They are busy finding ways to milk the mobile market. You need to wake up and smell the coffee.

PEN weapons and armor with TET gold acc's is softcap.

Telling yourself it is anything less than that is just what a casual player would do.

Gear that you can get quite easy is softcap.
Otherwise the word soft is used wrong.

Hmm I play quite regularly but guess I'm still casual. I like questing and exploring and have only one TRI item, 10+ alts though :D Agree totally that TRI should be easier to get, removing the enchancement change to drop PRI would be a good start. Could remove the drop mechanics totally; thats the most sadistic thing I've ever seen in a game. Repairing is enough :)

    --Edit--
Remove the mechanics only from armor & weapons. Leave the accessories as they are; although blowing up a 60mil ring could give e.g. some crafting material (or shattered ring o_O) ;)

Well, it's simply a matter of perspective and what one expects as a casual player (or in general).

Is this game casual-player-friendly? No, for reasons you stated and more. Can this game be played casually? Absolutely, but you will never be competitive and effectively locked out of certain content. Is this a problem? I dare saying it's not for as long as you pick this game in order to satisfy your needs as a casual player. If you are looking for competitive PvP, this is not the right game. If you are looking for challenging PvE content, this is not the right game. But is this what a casual player is primarily looking for anyway? How can you be competitive in those areas - all grinding and gearing aside - if you can only invest a handful of hours per week?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not speaking in favor of grind, casino-enchanting, siege princesses hogging castles and payout-abuse. It's poor content for mediocre players with a lot of time at their disposal. However, even if this kind of content was drastically changed (equalized gear, more accessible, etc.), you would still not be competitive as a casual player.

That said, there is plenty of content left in this game to play as a casual player: Exploring, questing, workers/nodes, life-skills, even the occasional grinding. When I initially started the game back in 2016, I've spent many many hours just doing that without ever touching grind and enchanting past DUO (wasn't even in the game then). That playtime alone will keep you busy for month as a casual player. As I initially said, it's a matter of picking the right game in order to satisfy your (casual) needs. If you want competitive PvP, this is not the right game for it - this isn't even a matter of being a casual or not.

I think there is somewhat a fairly easy solution (especially to implement that is) but it would hinder PA's money making opportunity and there greed knows no limits so you're basically pissing in the wind trying to talk some sense into these fcktard Koreans.

They could make DUO the cap where going for TRI your armor and weapon wouldn't downgrade but still lose durability. Also with accessories make it safe enchant up to TRI, so if you're enhancing from DUO to TRI you'll lose the base accessory and 50% durability on the DUO. Make it so that going for TET/PEN accessories get destroyed giving veterans a long term goal, which on the side would also stop too many players racing ahead to full TET/PEN, and keep everyone on somewhat of an even playing field.

But this will never happen due to the fact this company is all about greed and milking the playerbase! Items downgrade back to PRI and you loose all your durability! Running scrolls is boring as fck but hey they sell you the convenience (artisan memory) to skip the time consuming boring aspect that everyone hates, for what essentially is an easy fix. Oh and now you can even just throw money at the screen and melt costumes for safer enhancing! Cron enhancing is so expensive (in game silver wise) that's it's actually not viable for a casual player, and your accessories still have a 33% chance to downgrade lol.

Yeah unfortunately your fighting a short sighted greedy developer who is only looking at massive short term profits and not longevity, "turn players, into payers".

Having casuals stick around in BDO is not what BDO aims for. It's a niche game where you only succeed if you put lots of time and work into it (and even that is not garantueed). There is no place for casuals in this game as those players will most likely not spend much money either.
There is no reason to try and keep them as the only thing they will do is fake fill the world but will not actually get to the content that is lacking players (nodewars/sieges).

I still agree tho that all those people running around and telling that without softcap you can't do anything are annoying af and just talk bs, trying to find excuses why they suck.
You can do perfectly fine with 500+ and do your part in nodewars.

If that's the most sadistic thing you've ever seen, i'm sorry for you.
I've played plenty of games where the complete destruction of items upon enhancing failure was a thing, similar to how accessories are right now, only that there are 15+ enhancement grades and every fail can destroy your item...It's lots of fun to run the same boss a hundret times to finally get that one good weapon you want and then failing it instantly trying to upgrade it from +0 to +1 and having to do the same **** again.
I would rather leave the downgrading as it is but remove the destruction of your accessories and let them downgrade instead upon failure.

Throwing low-end players a bone like you outlined here wouldn't even hurt their bottom line, imo. Why? Because these types of massively p2w games make virtually all their money from whales. They make way more money from the few people who drop $1000+ on them on a weekly basis, than the masses who might buy something every once in a while. And the whales operate in the upper tiers of the game. They p2w themselves there.

Why do you think they don't care about the low population? Because they make so much money from whales that they have zero respect for the "little guy" or even ordinary folks. Yep, they have zero respect and zero regard for the average Joe. Actually, they have zero respect for anyone. Look at what they did to Russians and tell me it's not true. Why do you think they are introducing mastery and the crafting changes in Driegan? Because they realized there is a pool of life-skilling whales that they haven't really tapped into yet. Throwing the masses of "casual" life-skillers under the bus in the process without second thought.

Problem is the fact that the BDO population thinks a casual is someone that "only" plays 4-5 hours day. That's hardcore in most other games.

Especially people that "only" plays 4-5 hours a day themselves(longer on weekends) while having the game in afk mode rest of the time, loves to claim they're casual in BDO lol. No clue how they reached that conclusion?

They also say stuff like: I'm casual and managed to get PEN or soft cap etc. This makes it kinda hard to objectively discuss progression routes, catch-ups and playability for real casuals.

Frankly, I don't think real casuals have much going for them at all in BDO. Not only because the grind and catch up needed is insane, but also because of cash shop requirements. BDO is definitely one of the most expensive games on the market, if you want a proper setup with pets, costumes, inventory, packs and weight. Vast majority of casuals trying out a game aren't willing to dish out hundreds $$$ just to get started.

But no doubt, it's at least possible for 35 hours a week "casuals" to catch up just fine in BDO atm. That needs to be said. Especially if they use the cash shop.

This game does not support casual play. If someone is truely casual they probably wouldn’t spend more than 3 hours a day playing (and that’s a highball imo)

More than that though everything is just so...homogenous.

All grinding is basically the same, Fighting monsters from 1-230AP is all the same and even when you get to 230+ things just become punching bags. Doesn’t matter where you grind, if your not 1 shotting groups of mobs every second its “bad”. Most of the time if you want to be “efficient” you limit yourself to at least 20% of your classes kit. And even if you don’t mind being limited to fighting mobs as threatening as grass is to a lawn mower, you only have 3-4 “colors” of grass to mow depending on your level range due to how unbalanced loot and exp are for grind spots.

Honestly if PvE wasn’t such an irredeemably boring experience I would be able to play this game so much more. The ONLY thing that keeps me playing is hope that the game may get better balance wise but honestly even if it does the amount of mindless grinding I would spend wasting my life is just too costly, especially considering how most of the time spent is being dissatisfied/bored.

If I want to waste time being bored now in order to have fun later, I might as well try progressing in real life by grinding classes. Best thing is I don’t have to deal with RNG saying “**** you” and shitting all over my efforts.

PEN is easy to get if you melt costumes.

TET accessories are easy to get if you are in a castle owner guild, or if you did SMH before nerf.

Softcap isn't 253 AP. That's the old softcap before the introduction of costume melting. The new AP softcap is 261 :)

That's why softcap is TRI wep/armour + DUO yellow acc. Softcap didn't shift because they didn't make it easier to achieve. 99% of community misuse the term "softcap".

i call myself casual with like 470GS, playing since release: Grunil Helmet TRI, Chest TET, Boots TRI and Bhegs Gloves at TRI, Liverto TRI, Green Ultimate AW at TET and Khutum at TRI, 2x Duo Blue Whale Earrings, Duo Seraph, 2x Duo Asula Rings and a +0 Asula Belt...i play 1- 4 Hours and not even logging in every day depending on my mood after a 10 hours shift starting at 6am in the morning...
i treat BDO as a game nothing more nothing less, its a hobby to get down after work, relax and have a bit fun chatting with guildies and thats it.
i see no reason to be like working a 2nd rl job in BDO, i mean for what? for the desaster called pvp? not really! xD
i spend money on bdo for sure but only for stuff i care about like costumes, beautysalon and mervs palette, pets and horse stuff but at the moment my wallet stays closed until we get some serious informations about the future of EU/NA since i dont feel like getting slapped in the face like our russian neighbours!

And here we go again with the "what is softcap" question. Since that post perfectly described the fallacy of the generally accepted "softcap" in bdo.

You should all just accept that the bdo community and active playerbase is completely deluded and disconnected from reality and just likes to throw around fancy internet words without knowing what they mean. Or try making up their own new definitions of those words which make no sense or contradict themselves, just as with p2w, catch-up mechanics, and spot-griefing.

"Softcap" in bdo => minimal requirements to play competitive pvp and to participate in any endgame content.
"p2w" in bdo => As long as i can benefit from it then its just fine, If i cant benefit from it then its not "win", duh!
"catch-up mechanics" in bdo => obviously isnt supposed to close the gap between new players and vets, but instead attempting to close the gap between whales and hackers by implementing more p2w, doih!
"Spot-griefing" in bdo => Killing others is completely fine and acceptable and not griefing because its a "pvp game". But killing "someone elses" mobs in a game where 98% of the active gameplay consists of killing mobs... REEEEEEEE!!
