Kakao/Daum and PA have a good relationship since the early beginnings if I recall correctly. So chances are Kakao won't be like Gamenet when renewing contracts.

 

That actually brings up a very serious issue which needs confirming. If Pearl Abyss was foolish enough to not include ownership of the data in the contract so they could maintain the database that's a huge failure on their part.

I would not be surprised in the least to see Pearl Abyss not renew with Kakao, despite Kakao's opinion on the matter. Which they have the power to do. If the first case is true, it would be possible for the second as well.

If that case is true I would highly advise everyone to consider that situation in making purchases. It's one thing to foolishly spend your money knowing what your getting into. It's a different case to believe you will have access to the intellectual property purchased, only to find out you have nothing.

@Smileybones is also highly confused on this matter. He still can't figure out that BDO stores the game information inside a database. Thus my example of how simple it is it to make changes to a database.

 

It isn't going to happen because Kakao is a subsidiary. Gamenet really ****ed their players over with this though.

I think Gamenet knew their time was up and realized that PA wants to self publish, so they decided to pull a Hilary and delete everything so PA can never get the chance to.

Looks like GameNet flipped, kinda expected if you know what reputation GameNet have and what's left of its rep is done for goods.

 

This is why I honestly think companies should self publish, (Like pa is attempting to do), does PA technically have a case to sue since now that Gamenet's license expired, they're basically stealing at this point?

 

The chance of this happening with Kakao is small as they are both South Korean companies with a good business relationship.

With that said, this type of server wipe is unacceptable and players across all servers must protest this. We must demand a clear explanation as to:

1. Why the Russian servers were wiped (I.e. Why wasn’t PA the owner of the data)?;
2. What steps they are taking to ensure this won’t happen in other regions; and
3. How they plan to compensate Russian players who lost accounts?

 

As far as the end user agreement, it is clear that our purchases and even access to the game is not a right as nothing is ours even if real money changes hands.

As far as the publisher-developer contract, we are unfortunately in the same boat as Gamenet. PA owns the IP, not the databases. It would be as if all the real IP owners of various fandoms tried to take over and run fanfiction.net. Would suck for all the authors to lose that publication, but in the case of fanfiction, you usually still have some rights to your own documents.

We have no rights in this case. If kakao wants to use our progression as a bargaining chip, saying keep us or loose the whales, they could do that.

Rumor had it Game net was withholding profit hence the self-publish route. Most likely PA won't self-publish in EU/NA. If they do they risk wiping not only EU/NA but also KR. PA has the database but they don't have the accounts that link to their game net counterpart. Also, don't you think the new event was a major coincidence? Play till 56 and get a free account? Feelsbad for the Russian community.
